Below is a
letter that Paul Smith, the new Mille Lacs Academy Executive Director spread
in an attempt to solicit
support for the Academy's property tax exemption. Perhaps because he is new,
he doesn't understand that the County Commissioners have nothing to do with
granting or denying property tax exemption, and the State Senior Appraiser
follows the law and is not influenced by public opinion. Likewise, the
County Assessor.
Paul also neglects to inform his "supporters" that if Nexus pays their due property taxes, everyone else in the county will pay less taxes. Is he really asking everyone to please "cut your nose off to spite your face"? Read below. Enjoy. |

RE: Mille Lacs Academy Information
Please let me introduce myself. I am Paul Smith, the new Director here at Mille Lacs Academy. I have been here a little over a month and have found the program and the community a wonderful place to be. I apologize for not meeting everyone in person yet, but I will be making more personal contact in the coming days. Right now, the Academy needs your help.
As we all know, our building project has brought out a few of the naysayers around the community. These are a small number of people, but they are the ones talking. We need the supporters of the Academy and the community to speak out.
Right now, we are requesting you write or call the County Commissioners and let them know how important the Academy is to the community and the kids we serve. In particular we need the commissioners to take action to support our tax exemption. This is critical if we are to continue our project here and we don't have much time. We need these contacts to be made quickly.
I have attached a sheet with addresses and contact information. Please, write a letter, or make a call and in your own words, let them know how important this is and to make immediate contact with the Department of Revenue. Ask them to also let us know what kind of response they receive.
I appreciate your help and your support for the Academy. It takes all of us working together to make a difference in the lives of these children. .
