City and
County Buy into Nexus Lies.
NEXUS exposed!
Mille Lacs News Staff Writer
On November 14, 2007, former Nexus CEO Jim D'Angelo presented
a handout at the Onamia city council "public hearing" on tax abatement.
While it's unusual for Nexus to be giving rather than begging for handouts,
copies of the four-page document, titled "Mille Lacs Academy Fact Sheet", were distributed among
citizens at the meeting. To view a copy in its entirety,
We've found a few "facts" to dispute in this
little brochure and dispute them we will. Our comments are in red.
Please take
the time to read this!
The first page begins with
"Safety"
"People may have been led to believe that
Mille Lacs Academy residents are dangerous, aggressive pedophiles.
(Pedophiles? Who said anything about
pedophiles?) That just
isn't the case. The typical adolescent sent to the Academy is from rural
Minnesota and has been sexually inappropriate with a younger or same age
member of his family. Seduction and manipulation is common, physical
aggression is not." (That may or
may not be typical, but MLA has historically had violent, aggressive
convicts and may have them in the future. It only takes one to create
a permanent, irreversible disaster in a victim's life.)
"The youth at Mille Lacs Academy are
receiving treatment and learning how to understand and change their
behavior. They are not locked in the facility because they are not felt by
referral sources or us to be a danger."
(Some of these "youth" are over 6 foot tall
and weigh over 200 pounds. Some have been diagnosed as dangerous 'sexual
psychopaths' by the court that convicted them. Also, besides receiving
treatment at the Academy, the "youth" are used in research. Notice that
Nexus doesn't mention this.)
Examples of Mille Lacs
Academy sex offender court cases
These cases illustrate the violence these "kids"
are capable of. Level 3 sex offenders and sexual psychopaths have been in
MLA programs before and may be in the future.
"Even so, safety is of paramount concern to
us; we provide virtually constant supervision.
[If they are not dangerous, why is safety such a
'paramount
concern' and why do the sex offenders need 'constant supervision'?]
"As a result,
in the last decade,
we have had only one incident,
a youth stealing a car while on run from the campus. He did not harm anyone
and returned to the program the same day."

If Nexus' claim is true, it directly refutes both the Mille
Lacs County Sheriff's
reports as well as the Onamia Chief of Police, who provided the
Mille Lacs News with not 1 single incident but
389!
Such a discrepancy
could hardly be an oversight! Nexus said:
"During the past five years,
we've had no incidents..."
In the past five years, according to law
enforcement, there have been:
43
runaways, 11 assaults, 2 burglary/break-ins, 3 criminal damage to property,
4 disorderly conduct, 1 criminal sex, 4 fights, 2 indecent exposures, and 5
out of control juveniles.
These are reports of 911 calls which required
police response, (sometimes by multiple deputies). The figures do not
include unreported incidents handled in-house by MLA staff which did not
require officers to contain the situation. Why would Nexus lie to us about
their safety record in our community? Well... it worked. They got their tax abatement,
didn't they?
"During the past five years, we've had
no incidents..."
Nexus reported 1/389
Concern for the sex offenders may seem
benevolent, but where is the compassion for their victims and concern for
possible future victims? The little ones at the daycare centers need to be
protected. Nexus lies put children's safety at risk.
